Karşıyaka is a district of İzmir Province of Turkey. Bayraklı in the east, Bornova in the northeast, Menemen in the north, Çiğli in the west and İzmir Bay in the south. It is a district that is largely integrated with the urban fabric in the part between the foot of Yamanlar Mountain and the sea.
According to INGEV's research, Karşıyaka is the 7th most developed district of Turkey.
The settlement area was named "Karşıyaka" because it is located across the city center of İzmir. It was referred to as "Kordelio" in 19th century Western sources. Although they previously linked the name "Western Cordelia" with the Crusades commander, King Richard I of England, the thesis that the king, who had never been here, might have a relationship with the name Cordelia, was rejected in the 19th century sources. In the 13th century Byzantine sources, a settlement called "Kordeleon" is mentioned in the region and whose location cannot be determined exactly, and it has been argued that the origin of the name can be taken back from these dates.
Accordingly, it is argued that Kordelyo may be a purely Anatolian name, and it has been suggested that it may be etymologically related to similar Anatolian names such as Gordion, Gördes, Kardakçı Mountain, Kardamyla. In conjunction with the words "grha-" in Sanskrit, "grad" in Slavic, "hortus" in Latin, and "garden" in German/English, meanings such as "place, cut, castle, garden, isolated for any purpose" It has been suggested that it was formed by the combination of the word "gurta" in Hittite/Luwian, and "ela" meaning "passage, throat, valley" in the languages of the Pelasgians/Luwis/Lydians, and the suffix -ion, -eio, which came to the end of place names in ancient Greek and modern Greek. .
Karşıyaka was opened to settlement with the commissioning of the İzmir-Menemen railway in 1865 and is a developed settlement especially after 1874 with the launch of ferry services with İzmir center (Konak). In 2008, some neighborhoods in the east of the district were connected to the newly established Bayraklı district.
Karşıyaka is located on an area of approximately 51 km2 in the north of İzmir Bay. Its altitude varies from 1 to 700 meters. There is Yamanlar Mountain within its borders. Bayraklı in the east, Bornova in the northeast, Menemen in the north, Çiğli in the west and İzmir Bay in the south. It has 27 districts.
